2012 NEWS & EVENTS

Do you have news or photos to share?  Classmates would love to hear about you!  Please send to jan@lhs65.net

Have you moved? Do we have your CURRENT contact information and email address in our database?

In Florida to cheer on his beloved Northern Illinois University Huskies at the Orange Bowl, NIU's Deputy Provost, Gip Seaver, grabbed a bit of camera coverage before the big game. Check out his face time at right ->

December found classmates Tony Guehl (and his wife, Sally, at right) lunching in Escondido, CA with Jackie Trato Edwards. Happy Holidays!
At least one classmate suffered the devastating effects of October's Hurricane Sandy. New Yorker Buz Barclay wrote, "We had 2 1/2 foot waves breaking up against the house and nearly a foot inside it. My two sons rescued us, coming down from their homes upstate, showing up 6 hours after the water receded with a truck full of cleaning equipment, industrial dryers, generator, water pump, electric and kerosene heaters and the energy and leadership of two thirty-somethings, which is a large multiple of one sixty-something." Buz continued, "Our classmates in the Carolinas and Florida are old hands at this, but we are just practicing for when we move down there...and while the process is pretty overwhelming, we fared better than many."

A 30-year career as a foreign service officer with USAID took classmate Terry Brown all over the world. Then, after "retiring" in 2000, Terry spent 11 years working with several international private voluntary organizations and two years ago rejoined USAID to help develop new operational guidelines and train staff at U.S. Embassies around the world.

The photo (at right) pictures Terry and his wife, Linda, "at our favorite restaurant in Antigua, Guatemala."

Will you share a recent photo of yourself? Classmates are always thrilled to see current pics of "old" friends!

Taking a break while on a recent safari in Kenya, former exchange student Jaap Mondt (left) relaxed between photography sessions.

Additionally, during a trip to Oman to teach a course on geophysics, Jaap visited a number of beautiful wadis (valleys) and the mosque of the Sultan of Oman. His next teaching in Oman is scheduled for January when Jaap hopes to enjoy cooler weather for traveling in the sand desert south of Muscat.

NC Group Dinner A trip through NC en route to a granddaughter's Marine boot camp graduation at Parris Island, SC, found Deanna Shaffer Pastor (above & left center) and husband Bill stopping overnight at the home of Jan Barker Lefevre (2nd from right) and husband Dick. Joining the two couples for dinner were fellow North Carolinans Ron Ford (left), Janet Matherly Ford '66 (2nd from left) and Doug Chidester (right).

As most of us turned 65 this year and perhaps dreaded opening that first medicare correspondence, Marybeth Wright Styer looked on the bright side and exclaimed, "Not so bad turning 65 after all!"

And who wouldn't be cheering with wheels like that for a birthday gift? Looking GOOD Marybeth!

Jim Converse sends greetings to all from chilly Michigan where he recently retired as District Sales Manager of ABF Freight System in South Bend, IN after 23 years with the firm. Congrats Jim! The new retiree reports that after a "few months off" he'll be serving as a consultant for a logistics firm in Chicago. Pat Denny Digit & Dave Digit

Retirement congrats go out to Pat Denny Diget! She is pictured at left enjoying some rare "R & R" with husband Dave.

Pat says that she now has "more work to do than ever before." Can any other recent retirees relate to being busier than ever?

Dick Lefevre, Jan Lanham, Jan Barker Lefevre, Sam Lanham

With temps in the high 90s, late June found the Lanhams and Lefevres "tasting good times" at the famous (or was it infamous?) Henry's Louisiana Grill in Acworth, GA near Hotlanta. As Cajun spices filled the air and spirits flowed, the group celebrated Dick's birthday with laughter and song. Pictured left to right are Dick Lefevre, Jane Lanham, Henry, Jan Barker Lefevre and Sam Lanham.

(Note 'gator behind Sam!)

Greetings from Montreal

Buz Barclay sent this pic from the Formula 1 Grand Prix Du Canada to prove that he had really made prior plans for the same weekend as the North Carolina mini-reunion in June. Looks like you're having fun Buz!

Dee Colburn-Morehouse

Dee Colburn-Morehouse recently wrote, "Please let me apologize for not communicating more often. I have been going from Real Estate Rentals (a guaranteed income) to Real Estate Sales, which takes a bit of effort. I work on Cape Cod in vacation paradise or the towns of Wellfleet, Truro, Provincetown and Eastham, MA."

If you happen to be looking for Real Estate in the area or are just passing through, please give Dee a call to say "Hello!"

You can learn more about Dee and where she lives via her web page at Kinlin Grover Real Estate.

Pics from the Southeast Mini-Reunion have been posted in the Reunion Gallery.
Be sure to check it out!

Where's the next mini-reunion? We hear there's something brewing in Wisconsin.

Butch Fry, Tom Miller, Sam Lanham LHS baseball was just one topic of conversation for three classmates when (l-r) Butch Fry, Tom Miller and Sam Lanham met for lunch in Cartersville, GA on April 10. As luck would have it, all three friends and their respective spouses will descend on Statesville, NC June 8 for the Weekend Open House.

Connie Abbey Callihan (right) sends greetings to the class from her home in Sebring, Florida. She and her husband Jim enjoy casinos, cards with friends and sightseeing.

Carol McKay Schelb (left) recently attended the Northeast Michigan Wrestling Association State Finals in Bay City where she cheered on two young grandsons. Apparently her cheers were heard. Grandson Connor took home a fourth while grandson Cole finished in first place. Congratulations to the Schelbs!

On an extended road trip from cold, cold Manitoba, Canada to the sunshine state of Florida, Susie Reed Plett and her husband Ken recently stopped in North Carolina to visit and dine with Jan Barker Lefevre and her husband Dick. The foursome enjoyed good stories and lots of laughs over a variety of finger-licking-good hot wings.

Pictured at immediate right are (l-r) Sue, Jan, Ken and Dick.

Pictured at far right are Jan (left) and Sue (right).

Book Across The Bay 2012 By the looks of the clear sky over Wisconsin's frozen Chequamegon Bay, it must have been cold for the Book Across The Bay 2012 nighttime cross country ski race. After finishing the event in 1:16, Jerry Dubman reports, "Crystal clear night. Stars were out of sight!" Jerry Dubman - Book Across The Bay 2012
Paula Bowker Paula Bowker recently enjoyed two weeks cruising the Adriatic Sea on a small ship. Land tours in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro highlighted her excursion. Bowker reports that nearly every day was sunny and the scenery was magnificent. In addition to standard cruise amenities, Bowker even enjoyed a dinner hosted by a local family. Next, this traveler is looking forward to a river cruise down the Danube during the fall of 2013.
It was a warm winter day in Florida when classmates Mike Stacy (left) and Dennis King (center) reunited after more than thirty years! Joining them for the day at Disney World were Mike's wife, Trisha (not pictured), and Dennis's wife Karen. Oh happy day! Mike Stacy, Dennis King, Karen King
